My Current Lists: Black Templars 2,000

I realized today that it's been a while since I discussed what my current lists actually look like, and I also realized I promised to do so at some point in the hazy past.  First up: my favorite 40k army, the Black Templars.  Templars as a shooty army have some well discussed advantages and I think you all know about them by now.  So without further adieu, here is what I'm currently running in NOVA-style tournaments (which are the only style tournaments really worth playing in)...

Vow to hate on dem witches
HQ-
Emperor's Champion
-Abhor

[Typical choice, nothing really special.  Sits with a Terminator squad giving LD10.]

Fast Attack
Land Speeder Typhoon

[6 missiles and 3 Heavy Bolters a turn is a decent amount of firepower for 210 points.  Finding value.]

-2x Cyclone Launchers
-Tank Hunters

[Six troop choices.  I see far too many Templar lists skimping on troops to buy more Land Speeders or Terminators.  I also see lots of Templar lists spending a lot on troops, but the points are going to stupid things like POTMS Razorbacks.  I brought six cheap troop choices, four melta bunkers for the midfield, and two to sit back and shoot at a distance.  With crappy troop choices you can be tempted to underinvest, but at a NOVA tournament that will cost you eventually.  But at the same time, with crappy choices you do not want to over-invest by buying bling to make them try to be a match for fully kitted out Grey Hunters or something.  Bring a lot of them, but keep them simple.]

Heavy Support
Predator Destructor
-Lascannon Sponsons
=125

[In a list with 6 Rhinos and 3 Land Speeders, some AV13 to hide behind is always welcome.  Plus for the points, these throw out some strong firepower.]

Total: 1,992

There you go.  Shoot until they're dead.  Any questions or comments or suggestions on this one?

  1. Hi, a little irrelevant but what's your thoughts on PoTMS vindicators?

    1. They are garbage, tremendous waste of points. The best case scenario you get to threaten one unit per turn, and there is too high a chance that the shot will do nothing. Maybe in some alternate universe where people run foot armies and don't get cover saves.

  2. 1. Without a Castellan or Marshal, you have 8 units of BT Infantries (2 ELITE and 6 TROOP) that will suffer from the "Kill Them ALL" rule.

    a. Do you pass most of your leadership checks for "Kill them all"?

    b. Or do you tend to actually shoot the nearest available enemy?

    2. With 4 units of TROOP with Multimelta - i take it that they usually just cruise during Turn 1 or maybe even Turn 2 and only gets to shoot at Turn 3 with a decent chance to miss (happens to me all the time). So do these 4 MM units score many hits or they tend to scare more than kill?

    3. As for the 2 PRED - I presume that you park 1 at each rear corner of the board and they just sit still and shoot till they get busted?

    1. 1. The melta hunters will 99% of the time be shooting at the closest unit anyway. The 2 rear guard troops will ideally only have LOS to the unit they intend to ses, but their shooting is such a small part of the army that if they screw up I won't be too sad.

The Terminators are base LD9, and one unit will get the EC, which is 10. that gives them a good chance of shooting at what they want. Additionally, since the terminators can move and fire, you can usually arrange it so that they can only see a single unit.

      2. Threat bubble essentially. They keep the enemy from being able to move forward as fast as possible which protects my terminators. You can't ignore them, but individually they aren't significant.

      3. Depends. If I have first turn I will usually deploy that way. If I'm going second, and up against a list with good long range shooting, I will use them as an AV13 wall to protect my other stuff.

  3. Why do you like the 2 predators over another unit of CML terminators?

    1. Mech Saturation. If I don't get the first turn they provide a nice AV13 wall for the light mech.
