My Current Lists: Dark Elves 2,500

I feel kinda dumb doing this article since I just posted my “current” DE list last month, but since that one is out of date, this isn’t entirely inappropriate.  Not too many major changes, and it pretty much plays the exact same as before, just more reliable due to a harder to kill battle standard bearer.  Here goes…

Now where did I park my Dark Pegasus?

Lords

Dreadlord
-Dark Pegasus
-PoK
-CoC
-Whip of Agony
-mundane armor kit
=300

Supreme Sorceress
-Level 4 (Shadow)
-Dark Steed
-Focus Familiar
=315

Heroes

Sorceress
-Level 2 (Metal)
-Dark Steed
-Tome of Furion
=162

Master
-Cold One Chariot
-Mundane Armor kit
-Crimson Death
=205

Death Hag
-Battle Standard Bearer
-Cauldron of Blood
=225

[The big change here is the switch to the Cauldron BSB.  I’ve explained this change in length before, and it’s mostly all upside.  I love the Dreadlord, but there are times when I really wish I had a second level 4 in that slot; usually turns when I roll like 11 power dice, haha.  I think the DL is better for all comers than a second Supreme Sorceress would be, especially against warmachine or deathstar armies.]

Core

12x Repeater Crossbowmen
-Shields
-Standard
-Musician
=142

12x Repeater Crossbowmen
-Shields
-Standard
-Musician
=142

5x Dark Riders
-Repeater Crossbows
-Musician
=117

5x Dark Riders
-Repeater Crossbows
-Musician
=117

5x Dark Riders
-Repeater Crossbows
-Musician
=117

[Same core as before.  Dark Riders really aren’t meant to last more than a few turns, which is a pre-emptive answer to people who say that they die easily.  I expect to be able to abuse their vanguard movement to screw up my opponent’s deployment, to use their feigned retreats to slow my opponent’s beater units and death stars, and to provide ablative wounds to my Dark Steed equipped casters through LoS saves.  All of these things are likely to result in their deaths eventually, sooner rather than later.  Which is fine to me because by the time my chariots and hydras are hitting their lines, I don’t need the Dark Riders anymore.]

Special

3x Cold On Chariots
=300

Rare

2x WarHydra
=350

[Same beater units as before, same weaknesses against big blocks as before.  You need to skillfully use Magic and multi-charging to beat armies with big blocks without being bogged down.  Against elite or MSU armies you can just rampage at will.]

Total: 2,492.

This leaves me with 8 points extra, so likely some character will get a 5 point random magic item, unless someone has some cooler suggestions.  I’m all ears.  In any event, I hope to get some bat reps done soon with the list so you can see how it plays out.

  1. As a new Fantasy DE player, I have found your blog very informative. I have only played in a few tournaments so far. Do you find that you do not need to bring a Dispel scroll?

    1. Dispel Scroll is bad. The strong magic armies have ways to cast with IF and the lesser magic armies you just throw your dice at the spells that matter.

    2. I disagree. I've had my good dice turns mangled by someone dropping a Dispel Scroll on my best cast so they can save their dice for the others. You don't need one, but if you can throw one in there without giving up something you do need, you might as well.

    3. @Von Fair enough, but I find I never have the points without giving up something I need, haha.

  2. Dude, why would you ever take Dark Riders, they die so easy...

haha, just getting back into the wargaming scene after a few needed months of hiatus. Imagine my surprise to discover that not only Vamps but Empire are both out now, Ogres were new when I stopped paying attention! I'll have to look up your reviews here shortly so I don't get stomped out of my willful ignorance :-p

Good to see you're still active though!

Also, I found your lost painting scores from Nova. Here's the link (if you didn't know about it before this):

    Going again this year?

    1. Whoa nice to know my scores actually happened haha. I didn't do a review of those army books in depth since I didn't get copies of them, unfortunately.

I don't think I'm going to NOVA again this year, I'm using my summer vacation time and money going to my sister's graduation from law school. I have only played like 5-10 games of 40k since last year anyway, so I'm definitely not prepared. Hopefully 6th Edition reignites my desire to play.

  3. Hello,

6th edition player here who just started 8th edition.
I used to play the "other shiny elves" and bretonnia.
due to other stuff in live i had to put warhammer for way to many years on hold. in those years i read the malus darkblade books and now im in love with the dark elves.
Your blog helped me getting back into 8th and on dark elves.
Many thanks and kuddos to your blog.

I have 1 question its might be stupid and silly but in this list and a few other you spend more then 25% on heroes and lords? i figured you as a guy that smart enough to know what he is doing so i dont doubt you but, what am i overlooking?
i only played 2 games so far but from what i under stand its 25% heroes 25% core 25% special 25% rare in choices right and you have almost 1200 points on heroes/lords in 2500?

in 6th edition i used to play fast armies like this and this seems the only viable way to do it with DE now so i would like to know!

    keep up the good work

    Cheers.
